Woodblock Printing

Woodblock carving is one of the oldest forms of printmaking, a relief method where wood is carved away to create an image. In this class, you will watch demonstrations on each step: creating an image, transferring the image to a woodblock, carving, and hand printing. Students then create their own woodblock, carve it out, and have a print worthy of framing! No experience necessary; beginners and intermediates welcome.  Please note: All class supplies are provided. Prior to arrival, we recommend that students consider a handful of ideas for their woodblock and print out a mirror copy of the chosen image. Ideal imagery has bold shapes or lines to make carving easier. Woodblock dimensions are approximately 6x6 inches. Students will have an hour and a half to carve their images. 

Age: This class is appropriate for ages 14+.  

Location: This class will take place at Kali Ann Art Studio, located on the fourth floor of the historic Hungerford Building at 1115 E. Main St, Suite 416, Rochester, NY 14609. Please enter through Door #2 to access the stairs or elevator to the fourth floor. Take a right out of the elevator and follow the hallway to the studio.
